Secret Winchester

The much-visited city of Winchester will be well known for King Alfreds statue, the Great Hall and Jane Austens final resting place. However, woven into its long and remarkable history are hidden gems of little-known stories, from the bishop who had a vision of King Arthur on one Winchester hill, to the sorry fate of an Anglo-Saxon earl who lost his head on another; from an empress fighting for the Crown, to the eventful life of one medieval Jewish family; from the horrors of the Black Death, to the opulence of a Tudor royal wedding. Centuries of commerce and culture, religion and war have shaped the city. Fully illustrated throughout, Secret Winchester delves beneath the surface of this ancient capital, journeying from Iron Age origins to Victorian aspirations through medieval fairs, Restoration races and Georgian theatres, inviting the reader to discover the lesser-known facts and hidden aspects of Winchesters history. About Anne-Louise BartonElizabeth Hill-Goulding

Anne-Louise Barton grew up in Winchester and has spent most of her working life there. Her interest in its history has developed through her father John Barton who is the author of several local interest titles some of which she assisted on with producing the photographs and illustrations. For the past twenty years Anne-Louise has been a bookseller both in the new and second-hand book trade and has recently taken over from her father as a partner at The Winchester Bookshop. Elizabeth Hill-Goulding has worked in childrens publishing and on a national magazine. She moved from Bristol to Winchester in 1994 and after a brief spell working at Winchester University became a full-time mother of three. In recent years Elizabeth has taken a keen interest in local history and this has led her to work in collaboration with her cousin and fellow Amberley author Anne-Louise Barton.
