The Lane: The Official history of the world famous home of the Spurs
English
By (author): Tottenham Hotspur
In 1899 Spurs had a problem. The football club formed as ''Hotspur FC'' just 17 years previously was now so popular that their 14,000 capacity ground at Northumberland Park was unable to cope with the growing crowds. So, in the summer of that year a former nursery for growing fruit and veg located on land behind the nearby White Hart pub was purchased, the stands from the old ground dismantled and reassembled on the new site, turf was laid and a pitch marked out. The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history! From its new home - known as White Hart Lane despite never being officially named as such - the ''Flower of the South'' blossomed into one of the world''s most famous and illustrious football clubs, and with a ground to match. Monumental new stands were erected so that by the 1930s ''The Lane'' could accommodate crowds of more than 70,000. The Lane is a unique portrait of one of one of football''s great cathedrals, and the most comprehensive study of the ground ever published. Packed with exhaustive detail and insight, and drawing on a treasure trove of classic photographs and illustrations, this lavish coffee table book tells the full history of the stadium, its iconic features, the greatest games it has hosted, and includes exclusive interviews with Spurs legends who have played on the famous turf.
