The author is a water geologist. Much of the content of this book relates to his search for underground water and bringing it to life where it is sorely needed. The narrative ranges over many countries, mainly in Africa but also in the Middle and Far East, and in the relative luxury of Europe. Though working conditions were usually uncomfortable, rarely comfortable, and sometimes dangerous, accounts are suffused with humour and enthusiasm. Illustrations include two original cartoons very kindly contributed by Matt relating to the text and several maps and photographs. Chapters of the book essentially follow the chronology of the author''s life, with deviations made when they seemed necessary.

About Robin Hazell
The author Robin Hazell is a geologist approaching the end of a long and distinguished career in a lifelong quest to supply man with water. Born in Kent in 1927 he was evacuated to New Zealand as a 13 year old during the second world war. He returned in 1945 to study at the Royal Collage of Science qualifying in 1948 and joined the Colonial Service as a fledgling geologist. Working in Nigeria then throughout Africa and in many other countries he contributed considerably to the knowledge of water in crystalline rocks and to effective and economic methods of finding and exploiting it. Leaving the Colonial Service in 1961 he developed his own consultancy specialising in locating evaluating and extracting underground water for a wide variety of people and potentates. Latterly he co-founded a charity whose objective is to refurbish and repair village water supplies in many remote corners of Nigeria. He now lives in semi-retirement beside one of the picturesque rivers that tumble down from Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.
