The \nresult, in architecture, is experientialism: the belief that what gives a\n building value, aside from fulfilling its shelter functions, is how its\n views and spaces make us personally feel as we move around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis\n thought provoking essay argues it's time to find a deeper basis for \nmaking and judging architecture, a basis which is not \npersonal-experience-multiplied, but which is dialogical and relational \nfrom the start. In this context, the word relationaldescribes an \narchitecture that guides people in search of encounter with (or \navoidance of) each other and that manifests and demonstrates those same \ndesires in its own forms, components, and materials. Buildings are \nbeings. When studying architecture, they teach as well as protect; they \ntell us who we were and who we want to be; they exemplify, they deserve \nrespect, invite investment, and reward affection. These are \nsocial-relational values, values that both underlie and go beyond \nexperiential ones (sometimes called 'phenomenological').
