His writing career began in the 1980s with the award winning Merry Mac Fun Co, a street theatre and comedy act for whom McLean wrote songs, plays and standup routines. The company won many awards, twice nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award. McLean's first book, Bucket of Tongues was published in 1992.
