This one channeled \u003cbr\u003ethrough with worm tunnels. \u003cbr\u003eBruises, a rotten half— \u003cbr\u003esometimes there’s nothing left \u003cbr\u003eto drop into the pot. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e                                  That phrase \u003cbr\u003eI could have said: “you still \u003cbr\u003ehave us…” \u003cbr\u003e                  The knife \u003cbr\u003eslides easily beneath the skins, \u003cbr\u003etop to base, spiraling \u003cbr\u003ethem away. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe insubstantial us. \u003cbr\u003eIt could as well be the pear \u003cbr\u003etalking to the river, turning to \u003cbr\u003ethe grass (“you still have us”). \u003cbr\u003eBesides, it’s just \u003ci\u003eme \u003c\/i\u003e\u003cbr\u003ea pear in my hand (the slop bucket full \u003cbr\u003eof peels)—and sometimes, yes, that \u003cbr\u003eseems enough: a pear— \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e                                      this larger one, \u003cbr\u003eyellow-green, turning to red: \u003cbr\u003e“Duchess” maybe, “Devoe,” \u003cbr\u003eor what I want to call it: “Flemish \u003cbr\u003eBeauty.” \u003cbr\u003e                 When I can’t sleep, \u003cbr\u003eI’ll hold my hand as if I held \u003cbr\u003ea pear, my fingers mimicking \u003cbr\u003ethe curve. The same curve \u003cbr\u003eas the newel post \u003cbr\u003eI’ve used for years, swinging \u003cbr\u003emyself up to the landing, always \u003cbr\u003ethrowing my weight back.
