After marrying in 1862, Tolstoy settled down, managing his estates and writing two of his best-known novels, \u003ci\u003eWar and Peace\u003c\/i\u003e (1869) and \u003ci\u003eAnna Karenina\u003c\/i\u003e (1878). \u003ci\u003eA Confession\u003c\/i\u003e (1879-82) marked a spiritual crisis in his life, and in 1901 he was excommunicated by the Russian Holy Synod.
