This book is an attempt to remedy the situation, at least to give a detailed analysis of one class of suffixes, i.e., seven suffixes forming abstract nouns. They are both of native (\u003ci\u003e-dōm\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003e-s(c)hipe(e)\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003e-hōd(e)\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003e–nes(se)\u003c\/i\u003e) and French origin (\u003ci\u003e-āge\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003e-(e)rīe\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003e-ment\u003c\/i\u003e). The analysis includes the semantics of the suffixes both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective as well as their productivity and dialect distribution. The study is data-oriented, hence the analysis of linguistic facts is dominating. The analysed material comes from the \u003ci\u003eDictionary of Old English\u003c\/i\u003e (A-F) based on the \u003ci\u003eToronto Corpus of Old English Texts\u003c\/i\u003e, the \u003ci\u003eToronto Corpus \u003c\/i\u003eand the\u003ci\u003e Middle English Dictionary on-line\u003c\/i\u003e.
