Wu Cheng'en was born in the early 1500s in the Jiangsu province of China during the Ming Dynasty. Although he briefly worked as a political official, his true passion was writing poetry and stories. After writing and traveling extensively, Cheng'en died in the 1580s. He is widely considered to be the author of Journey to the West, which was published anonymously in 1592.
