Josef Kalleya and Dante Vol 2

After passing through the challenging depths of Dante’s Inferno, witnessing the contrapasso punishment on sinners, Josef Kalleya’s path proceeds along the mountainous gradations of Purgatorio to eventually reach the summit of this second phase in Dante’s epic journey towards Heaven. Once again, we are given the opportunity to travel alongside Dante via Kalleya’s visual cosmography that responds to the events in the Divina Commedia – responses steeped in both admiration and disagreement – that carve out Kalleya’s own distinct path that parallels Dante’s. The transition from the “laden heaviness” of Hell to the “maraviglia” of Purgatory is immediately perceptible.
