The church lies at the centre of God's purpose. Christ gave himself 'to purify for himself a people that are his own'. But when we think about church, there's the tension between the ideal and the reality. The former is beautiful: God's special treasure, the covenant community, a haven of love and peace. The latter? A motley rabble needing constant rebuke and exhortation. Here we focus on the ideal, on what God intends his church to be, while all the time keeping in view the reality, so that we can grasp the changes that need to be made.
John Stott (Author) The Revd Dr John Stott, CBE, was for many years Rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London, and chaplain to the Queen. Stott's global influence is well established, mainly through his work with Billy Graham and the Lausanne conferences - he was one of the principal authors of theLausanne Covenant in 1974. In 2005, Time magazine ranked Stott among the100 most influential people in the world. He passed away on July 27, 2011. Jo Swinney (Publicist) Jo Swinney is the daughter of Peter and Miranda Harris, founders of theinternational movement A Rocha, which now operates in 20 countries including the UK. She is also goddaughter to our author Murray Watts. She hasstudied theology (MA in Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver, on top of a degree in English and African studies) and is a committedChristian - and a depressive, who has wrestled with her condition for some years. She still only in her mid-20s, which is the real USP for this book. Most authors on this topic are in middle life. There is a strong narrative thread running through the book, which again will appeal toa younger readership.
