Activists Assemble: We Are All Equal!

English

By (author): Shannon Weber Jade Orlando

Illustrated by: Jade Orlando

We all have the right to be treated equally, but what exactly is equality? A WHSmith Book of the Month for Kids Non Fiction, Activists Assemble: We Are All Equal! explains what it is to be a citizen, how important it is to treat, and be treated, as equal within the society, and how young activists can use their voice to champion equality.

Shannon Weber's inviting and accessible text allows readers to understand why equality should be celebrated. Discover the history of equality – both the successes and the tragedies, meet past and present faces who overcame discrimination to be a voice for us all, and explore ways you can make a difference and challenge inequality. Important topics such as disabilities, gender, religion, and race are discussed, giving readers all the information and practical advice needed to get their voices heard.

An activity section gives readers the opportunity to explore equality further: they can test their equality knowledge, start important conversations using the 'discussion time' questions, as well space to write down their thoughts and observations.

About Shannon WeberJade Orlando

Shannon Weber is the author of Activists Assemble and Feminism in Minutes and a book on US civics for children. She has also written for volumes such as The Feminism Book and Women: Our History. Shannon holds a Ph.D in Feminist Studies from the University of California and has taught courses in women's and gender studies, sociology, and education at several colleges and universities in California and Massachusetts, including Tufts University and Brandeis University. Her published scholarly work on LGBTQ+ social movements and history has appeared in various academic journals, encyclopedias, and edited collections. As a popular writer, Shannon's work has been published in venues such as AlterNet, Bitch Media, The Body Is Not An Apology, Everyday Feminism, and Teen Vogue. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Together with her partner and two pet children, she splits her time between the west and east coasts of the US. This allows her to spend time with all her family and not miss out on California Mexican food OR old architecture, two of her biggest loves.

Jade Orlando has loved art for as long as she can remember. After an impassioned childhood spent drawing cats and mythical creatures, she studied Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Jade’s work is colourful with a hint of weird, and has been featured in books, apparel, advertising and children’s products. Clients include Scholastic, Carter’s, Amazon, and Oopsy Daisy. Jade lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her bionic husband, greyhound, and four cats. When she’s not illustrating, you can usually find her curled up with her pets and a really good book.
