Shakespeare's potent use of garden imagery has captivated successive generations of readers and inspired the making of gardens across the globe. Laced with quotations and abounding with illustrations drawn from sources including Elizabethan gardening books, embroidered fabrics and hand-coloured herbals, The Quest for Shakespeare's Garden tells the story of the Bard's own garden at New Place in Stratford-upon-Avon, revealing its place in garden history.
Sir Roy Strong is an art historian, museum curator, writer, broadcaster and landscape designer. He has served as director of both the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Strong was knighted in 1982. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Strong has written many books on garden history and Elizabethan and Jacobean history, including The Renaissance Garden in England, also published by Thames & Hudson.
