This volume endeavours to pay homage to a unique city. The Order of St. John constructed their new city, the città nuova, in Malta in the late sixteenth century. Since then, knowing Malta also means encountering Valletta, the beautiful fortified Baroque city which is the focus of this book. It looks at the people who lived in Valletta and shaped the city over the centuries, as well as the evolution of its urban spaces.

There is always more to be said, learnt and written about Valletta. New discoveries enable fresh interpretations and a deeper appreciation of the past. Understanding Valletta is never-ending work in progress.
