John A. King III, MD, is a native of Illinois, but received his BS and MD from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. After World War II, he was stationed in Tsingtao, China with the Navy for two years. On return to civilian life in Rochester, he married his sweetheart, Martha Remington King, and completed his three years of resident work in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. King learned a lot about communication with patients, compassion, and caring while working with two senior internists in private practice. After the birth of his 4 children, Dr. King moved to Southern California to work for 20 years as a member of the Kaiser-Permanente Organization. In Rochester and Southern California, Dr. King was on the attending staff at the University of Rochester and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), where he taught residents the importance of effective communication with patients. Dr. King retired from active practice in 1986 and lives in Southern California.

Cynthia R. King, PhD, NP, MSN, RN, FAAN (also called Dr. King), is the youngest of Dr. and Mrs. John King’s children. Cyndy first earned a BS in Biology and Psychology at Trinity College before deciding to follow her father into health care. It was a logical choice, as she had spent time as a child going to the office and hospital with her father. With support and encouragement from her parents (John and Martie) she completed a BSN through the accelerated program at Creighton University. She continued her education by completing an MSN, post-masters NP, and PhD. During her PhD program, she married Michael Knaus. Over the years Cyndy has been a clinician, educator, administrator, researcher, and consultant, and has worked in the pharmaceutical business. From all of her mentors, but especially her father, Cyndy learned the significance and art of communicating successfully with patients and families. She and her husband now live in North Carolina.
