'Authentic, compelling . . . another winner for a northern author who has her home county written right across her heart’ Lancashire Evening Post
Beautifully written and enthralling from the very first word’ Gracie Heart
‘If you enjoy Dilly Court’s stories, you’ll love the latest heart-warming romance from Emma Hornby’ Yours

Bolton, Lancashire: 1943

Livvy knows that her family’s survival rests on her shoulders. With her parents gone, it falls to her to support her grandfather and her younger sister, Joan. But times are tough in the midst of war and most jobs only afford meagre pay, so Livvy makes the difficult decision to sell herself on the streets in order to make ends meet.

Her choice brings harsh judgement from local gossips, but Livvy can ignore them for her family’s sake. Joan is growing up, and Livvy’s determined that her life will be free of care. It’s harder to keep her unsavoury secret from the good, kind man who’s falling in love with her.

But then things take a darker turn. A US soldier begins harassing her – with dreadful consequences – and Livvy’s life spirals out of control . . .

Will she be able to find the peace, love and happiness she deserves, or will she lose everything she's fought to protect?

The third book in Emma Hornby's page-turning Worktown Girls at War series

Readers love Emma Hornby:

'Similar to Rosie Goodwin and Dilly Court, Emma Hornby tells a brilliant story that will keep you guessing . . . Pure talent.'
'Emma Hornby's books just keep getting better and better. Honest, gritty, lovely characters.'
'Emma is a wonderful storyteller and I can't wait for the next one!'
'Another beautifully written story by Emma Hornby'

Emma Hornby lives on a tight-knit working-class estate in Bolton and has read sagas all her life. Before pursuing a career as a novelist, she had a variety of jobs, from care assistant for the elderly, to working in a Blackpool rock factory. She was inspired to write after researching her family history; like the characters in her books, many generations of her family eked out life amidst the squalor and poverty of Lancashire's slums.
