The Italian cruise ship Willem Ruys was built between 1939 and 1947. When it was sold to the Italian Lauro Organization in 1966, it was renamed after the company owner Achille Lauro. After being hijacked by Palestinian warriors (PLO), in October 1985, the blue liner and cruiser made international headlines. Swept by a catastrophic fire Achille Lauro sank December 2, 1994, off the Somalian coast.
Arne Zuidhoek (1941) sailed with the Dutch Merchant navy, served in the Royal Netherlands Navy and sailed his 75ft schooner De Hoop. He studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts at Amsterdam and developed him - self as an ambitious artist. Besides that, he wrote more than 50 books on different aspects of shipping based on a thorough knowledge of maritime history. His studies and publications on piracy contributed to him being known nationally.
