This book brings together chapters authored by leading African American Studies/Black Studies scholars in the USA and the UK. It focuses on the roots of the discipline, reaching back to early brilliant Black intellectuals, discusses the historical and epistemological development of formal Black Studies, setting these in their socio-political contexts, and presents research methodologies and guidelines that are appropriate and valid for people of African descent. Professor Jeanette R. (Carlisle) Davidson was born and raised in Scotland. She has a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Strathclyde and an MSSW and PhD in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to beginning her career in the academy, Davidson worked as a social work practitioner and clinician. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. She has published extensively in the areas of African and African American Studies and Social Work and is the editor of African American Studies (Edinburgh University Press, 2010 and 2021). In 2025, she received the Lifetime Contribution Award from the National Council for Black Studies. Jeanette Davidson is Professor Emerita of African and African American Studies and Social Work, University of Oklahoma.
