Dr. Bilal Bagis is a seasoned economist, instructor, strategist, columnist and consultant, based in Istanbul / Türkiye.

He has a merit-based scholarship funded multidisciplinary B.Sc. (combining engineering with a business degree) from ITU (2006), a fully funded and theoretically focused M.A. in Economics from Sabanci University (2009) and a fully funded Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of California (2014). Dr. Bagis is grateful to the Turkish Government for education abroad fellowship, the Turkish TUBITAK, UC Regents, Fulbright, TEV, ITU and Sabanci University for all the awards, scholarships and financial support they have provided throughout his education.

Dr. Bagis, is an experienced economist and author with a strong background in policymaking, financial systems, and technology policy. His recent works, including reports for SETA and SAM on financial innovation and technological transformation, position him well to author a book on AI-driven decision-making in economics, finance or energy.

Since his undergraduate years, he has consistently focused on Türkiye’s macro instabilities and financial crises. His research interests lie in AI applications in economics and finance, international finance, macroeconomics, policy analysis, public policies and political economy. He has recently been interested in theoretical and practical implications of AI and digitalization as well.

Dr. Bagis specializes in bridging the gap between theory and practice. He focuses on and has a deep expertise in macro and financial stability and efficacy of policies at the discretion of policymakers. His analysis and working papers are published by various prominent institutions including the SETA Foundation and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ SAM. He is well-known for his extensive writing schedule, and coverage of Türkiye’s economic and financial development.

Dr. Bagis’s publications are already listed on some of the most prominent university library catalogs, including at Princeton University, Columbia University and UC Berkeley. He has so far taught various economics, math, finance, statistics and eCommerce classes. Prior to his academic instructor experience, he has worked as teaching assistant for various economics, finance and math classes both in Istanbul Türkiye and at the University of California.

Dr. Bagis has had numerous domestic and international presentations and publications on various venues. He has, so far, made academic presentations, gave talks by invitation and attended conferences in around 20 different countries, including those in the US, Russia, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. He has had various national and international talks over economics, central banking, monetary policy, international trade & finance, public policies, political economy and entrepreneurship.

In addition to his academic career, his extensive credentials include private sector experiences at various international and domestic companies and institutions, including Akbank, Sabanci Group, Turkish Central Bank, Yapı Kredi Bank, THY, Enquire, GLG Council, Monarch and family companies. Dr. Bagis has, overall, had an extensive experience as an academic, economist, strategist, columnist and consultant at various universities and companies in Türkiye and the USA.
