On the staff of The Times, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express and finally the Evening Standard, he travelled widely and reported a number of wars, recording his experiences in two volumes of memoirs: 1945: The Dawn Came Up Like Thunder (1983) and East and West of Suez (1986). He is the author of eight other books, mostly biographies, one of which, Horatio Nelson, was chosen as a runner-up for the Whitbread Award for Biography in 1988.
