Situated in the Amber Valley in Derbyshire, Alfreton is a lively community with a vast array of shops, pubs and public areas, each peppered with their own pockets of history waiting to be discovered. The area certainly has a long past - it is thought the town was founded by Kind Alfred who named the settlement after himself. In later years, the town's growth and prosperity was centred on agricultural production, cottage industries, coal mining and iron production. Today, Alfreton has much to offer, including the milestone, the lock-up, the Norman church of St Martin, which inspired local resident D. H. Lawrence in Woman in Love, and Alfreton Hall, the former home of the Palmer-Morewood family, who were Lords of the Manor for 334 years. Alfreton enthusiast Jill Armitage delves into this town's history and conveys just what has changed and what has stayed the same in Alfreton Through Time.
As a trained photo-journalist, Jill contributes to a number of pamphlets and magazines within Derbyshire, including publications produced by the Alfreton history society and local church. She has written close to twenty local history books over the last few years. She has a small, but growing collection of old photographs of the area, with contacts to others, which she builds upon in her spare time, alongside her involvement with the Romantic Novels Association to which she is a member.
