The US Army was not prepared for combat in France, and the remarkable achievement of the AEF’s commanding officer, John J Pershing, was the creation of an American field army, built and nurtured from the bottom up.
This book details the organizational structure, training and doctrine of the AEF and illustrates how it came to make a significant contribution to Allied victory in World War I.
John F Votaw is the Executive Director, Cantigny First Division Foundation, Wheaton, Illinois. Lieutenant Colonel (US Army, Retired) Votaw, a graduate of the US Military Academy (1961), commanded US Army cavalry and armored units through the battalion level and served in Vietnam in 1966–67. He completed graduate studies in history at the University of California, Davis (MA, 1969) and Temple University (PhD, 1991).
