This Norton Critical Edition offers an unrivaled selection of contextual and critical material, edited by two leading Montgomery scholars. “Backgrounds” brings together fourteen relevant excerpts from Montgomery’s journals, letters, and juvenilia along with literary selections from, among others, Sir Walter Scott, Byron, Caroline Oliphant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Louisa May Alcott. The cultural context of Anne of Green Gables is explored through the writings of Carole Gerson, Kate Wood, and Mary Henley Rubio. “Criticism” is divided into “Early Reviews and Responses” and “Modern Critical Views.” Eight reviews from 1908 to 1942 include Canadian, American, and British assessments. Critical essays are provided by, among others, Northrop Frye, Elizabeth Epperly, T. D. MacLulich, Juliet McMaster, Carol Shields, Margaret Atwood, and Elizabeth Waterston. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.
Mary Henley Rubio is University Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Guelph. She is the author, along with Elizabeth Waterston, of Writing a Life: L.M. Montgomery and editor, again with Elizabeth Waterston, of Oxford University Press' multi-volume The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery. She is the author of the definitive biography of L. M. Montgomery, Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings, editor of Harvesting Thistles: The Textual Garden of L.M. Montgomery and co-editor, with Glenys Stow, of KANATA: An Anthology of Canadian Children's Literature.
Elizabeth Waterston is University Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Guelph. She is the co-author of Writing a Life: L.M. Montgomery and co-editor of the multi-volume The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery. She is also author of Magic Island: The Fictions of L. M. Montgomery, Rapt in Plaid: Canadian Literature and Scottish Tradition, and editor of Children's Literature in Canada.
