An immediate bestseller, the book marked the beginning of her successful career as a novelist. She died in 1942 and was buried on Prince Edward Island, near the site of her old home. Montgomery immortalized this place, where all but one of her twenty books are set, through her descriptions of life, nature, community, and people of the island.
