This second selection of over 200 archive photographs of Stocksbridge and the surrounding district further explores the history of the town. As well as working as an excellent complement to the first volume new ground is broken with the inclusion of many family and wedding groups. Furthermore a special selection of illustrations pays tribute to those locals who served in the two World Wars.
Starting in the centre of Stocksbridge we travel out to the older centres of population; Midhope, Langsett, Deepcar, Wortley, Ewden and Bolsterstone and we are therefore able to contrast the various developments in the town's history with the features which have disappeared along the way.
Also observed is the changing way of life. Photographs of the people of the area show the great changes which occurred in both dress and demeanour over the decades. As industry expanded the people of the town prospered. Shopping facilities were transformed and modern means of transportation became more widely available. All of this is well illustrated. Leisure pursuits revolved around the church, school and the family. Festivals of drama and music, sporting activities, family gatherings and weddings are depicted within this volume.
This excellent selection of photographs, collected together and researched by the Stocksbridge and District History Society, is certain to spark reminiscences and revive the memories of all those who know the area.
