With more than 170 sculptures, drawings, and paintings, this is the first comprehensive view of the art of Renaissance man Arthur Carter. Successful in journalism and business, and trained as a classical pianist, Carter is an accomplished artist in the modernist tradition. His abstract sculptures allude to human gestures and interactions. Though firmly grounded, they appear on the verge of flight. Though silent, they suggest song. His lyrical drawings and rigorous paintings, often studies for sculptures, are informed by a deep familiarity with the artists he admires most: Mondrian, Kandinsky, Arp, Bracque, and Picasso.Art historian and journalist Charles A. Riley II explores Carter's work, and Peter Kaplan, editor of the New York Observer, contributes an illuminating biographical essay. Arthur Carter: Sculptures, Drawings, and Paintings presents the compelling artistic vision of a fascinating man.
Arthur Carter is an artist whose work has been exhibited at Salander-O'Reilly Galleries in New York, the Tennessee State Museum, and the Galerie Piltzer in Paris. His sculptures may be seen in public spaces throughout New York City. Carter is a man of many talents, having trained as a classical pianist, studied French literature and served in the US Coast Guard, he further pursued successful careers in investment banking and publishing. He is currently chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at New York University. Charles A. Riley II is an art historian, journalist, and entrepreneur. He is the author of several books on the arts. A former reporter covering finance, politics and science Riley has appeared on American TV as a commentator on business and the arts. He is the co-founder of WeMedia, the first multimedia company devoted to people with disabilities. Peter Kaplan is the editor of the New York Observer.
