Asian Australian Cultural Politics in Education

This book delves into the dynamics of contemporary Asian racialisation and anti-Asian racism, exploring how these entangled phenomena shape the experiences of Asian communities across various education contexts.

It focuses on the Australian context, with its unique and understudied cultural positioning, to provide a distinct analytical lens for examining the specificities of Asian racialisation. Simultaneously, the chapters speak to transnational dialogue on racialisation and racism by exploring a range of stories from various white settler colonial nations, particularly the United States, Canada and New Zealand. Drawing on chapter contributions written exclusively by scholars identifying as Asian, this work serves as an important piece of minority voice scholarship on the multifaceted nature of Asian racialisation and anti-Asian racism.

In interrogating the nuances of Asian racialisation within education settings, it considers context-specific opportunities for anti-Asian antiracism in educational institutions, and explores the potential of antiracist public pedagogy. This important resource will inform the research and practice of educators, researchers, policymakers, administrators, and advocates who have an interest in race and education.

Aaron Teo is a Critical Sociologist of Education at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He researches raced and gendered subjectivities of Asian migrant teachers and students, Asia literacy, and critical pedagogies. He serves on national advisory committees and holds multiple prestigious fellowships and awards.

Tisha Dejmanee is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Discipline of Digital and Social Media at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. She received her PhD in Communication from the University of Southern California. She is the author of Postfeminism, Postrace and Digital Politics in Asian American Food Blogs (Routledge, 2023). She is currently Co-Chair of the Asian Australian Studies Research Network (AASRN).

Ien Ang is a Professor of Cultural Studies at the Institute for Culture and Society at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, where she was the founding director and is currently an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow. She is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
