He has served as Assistant to the Vice President for National Security Affairs, Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs at the National Security Council, Deputy Assistant Secretary of defence for East Asia. He is author of Traditional Authority, Islam and Rebellion: A Study of Indonesian Political behaviour and editor or co-editor of volumes on Indonesia, Cambodia, ASEAN and U.S.-Thailand relations.
