When Ma Rainey's Black Bottom opened in 1984, August Wilson was unknown in theatre. YVONNE SHAFER is Professor in the Humanities at St. John's University, Staten Island. She has taught at numerous universities in the United States, Europe, and China and was a Fulbright Professor in Brussels. She has published several books and her articles have appeared in numerous journals.
