This book explores the paradox of a nation rich in language resources, yet characterised by monolingual thinking. With insight and passion, Clyne illustrates the ways in which our language resources can be consolidated and further developed for universal benefit.
Michael Clyne has held professorial appointments in Linguistics at the University of Melbourne, where he is now an honorary professorial fellow, and at Monash University, where he is Professor Emeritus. He has written extensively on bi- and multilingualism, intercultural communication and second language acquisition. His most recent books include Community Languages: The Australian Experience (1991) The German Language in a Changing Europe (1995) and Dynamics of Language Contact (1993). He has been awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour, the German Cross of Merit and an honorary doctorate of the University of Munich.
