Get the photo-illustrated inside story of how David Bertolino built the magical haunted kingdom that sparked an entire eerie industry.

A Hollywood extravaganza in rural New England filled with haunted houses, museums, a circus, movie stars, and more, Spookyworld turned Halloween into a season-long celebration. During its original twelve-year run, Spookyworld sparked a new phenomenon, bringing us haunted mansions and scary stories that would shape the world of horror fandom for years to come. In Behind the Screams at Spookyworld, Bertolino artfully illustrates how he created a never-before-imagined industry, with candid appraisals and intimate memories from the stars that floated through the park, alongside hundreds of rare photographs.

With forewords by Alice Cooper and Linda Blair, this groundbreaking book illustrates just how important Spookyworld was for the Halloween industry. It covers an array of scary subjects, including:

  • The Hauntrepreneur himself, David Bertolino
  • The evolution and creation of the park
  • The stunts that made the park infamous among its fans and detractors
  • Anecdotes from horror’s biggest stars in film and TV
  • And so much more!

From “Spooky Hayrides” to the “Scaryoke stage,” Spookyworld was a destination for all things horror. Behind the Screams at Spookyworld revives the park that sparked a haunted movement and explores the legacy that remains. Relive the thrills and chills of past years in this rare personal account from the King of Horror.

David Bertolino has been described as a combination of Walt Disney and Stephen King. Throw in PT Barnum and you’re getting closer. A producer, writer, and entrepreneur, he is first and foremost a showman. Bertolino was already a legend in the costume industry when he single-handedly transformed Halloween from a night of trick-or-treating into a season like Christmas. For a dozen years, Bertolino ran and was the spokesman for Spooky World, appearing in hundreds of newspapers and magazine articles, including the Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, and radio and television interviews on shows including The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Entertainment Tonight. Bertolino has pioneered the Halloween megastore concept and written and produced off-Broadway plays in New York and Los Angeles. He is also the subject of the documentary Spooktacular!.

Alice Cooper is a legendary rock icon and a household name who tours the world every year. He has hosted ten of his own annual Alice Cooper Celebrity Golf Tournaments, and is a comfortable five handicap. He is author of Alice Cooper, Golf Monster, published by Aurum.

Linda Blair is an American actress, activist, and beloved "scream queen" thanks to her role as Regan MacNeil in the 1973 horror film The Exorcist. The role won her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while firmly establishing her as a Spooky Season icon and cementing her in our nightmares for all time.
