Among the services provided by the Mill News Letter, published in conjunction with the Collected Works of John Stuart Mill, has been the collection of bibliographical information about Mill. From 1965 to 1970 an alphabetical checklist compiled by Dudley L. Hascall and John M. Robson was published serially, and subsequent issues have contained lists of recent publications. Professor Laine has now revised, updated, and indexed thses listenings for publication in more permanent form.
The bibliography lists almost 2000 books and articles published at the end of 1978 dealing in a substantial way with Mill's thought and career. Annotation has been provided where the title of the book or article is not self-explanatory, and occasionally to indicate the direction fo an argument or to quote a revealing or amusing passage. Cross-references note items that take up the same point or dispute it.
Three appendixes list light or satiric verse mentioning Mill, cartoons (both chiefly found during the parliamentary years), and portraits. Two indexes, a topical index and an index of persons cited, add to the usefulness of the volume.
