Big Deal! is a tantalising compendium of exclusive football transfer tales you’ve never heard before – on what was and on what could have been. It’s a book guaranteed to delight football fans everywhere!

Veteran journalists Richard Sydenham and John Wragg gained exclusive contributions from an array of star names including Jürgen Klopp, the late Sven-Göran Eriksson, the late Gerard Houllier and Claudio Ranieri, plus homegrown legends such as Kevin Keegan, David Moyes, Sam Allardyce and Martin O’Neill.

Inside this revealing book you will find:

  • Exclusive interviews with 100 managers, past and present, from a vast array of British clubs
  • Intimate details of the managers’ best signings, and previously unknown stories of players they tried to sign but couldn’t get the deal over the line
  • Contributions from many ex-internationals – including six England managers, five Wales and Northern Ireland managers and three from both Scotland and the Republic of Ireland
  • An in-depth statistical section, showing how many clubs are represented by participating managers – ten ex-Manchester City and five ex-Liverpool managers feature, including the legendary Jürgen Klopp
  • Stories on star players from various eras, such as Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo, Peter Schmeichel, Diego Maradona, Heung-min Son and Gary Lineker
  • The answers to many tantalising questions… Who regrets not buying Sadio Mané? Who almost bought Harry Kane before his career took off? Who named Alan Shearer as their best signing?

You’ll get the inside track on some of the most momentous transfers in British football, while the transfers that almost – but never quite – materialised will surprise many.

Richard Sydenham has been a sports journalist since 1994. He worked as a freelance for news agencies such as Reuters, Associated Press and for Bloomberg as a staff reporter, then more recently for the Daily Star Sunday. This is his seventh book. John Wragg worked for the Daily Mail before becoming the Daily Star’s chief football writer for the north. He then joined the Daily Express as Midlands football reporter. This is his first book.
