This collection of essays and articles from the pages of Wooden Boat magazine includes some 18 years-worth of articles that collectively represent a wide-ranging and important work of American yachting history. Readers will discover engaging tales that range from that of the fascinating, 1895 America’s Cup winner to America’s oldest marine engine, the latest in electric propulsion, and insightful looks at a variety of fascinating characters including designers, builders and sailors.

Stan Grayson is widely known for his books and articles about American yachting and small-craft history, and the American automobile and marine engine industries. After receiving a Master’s Degree in English from Pennsylvania State University followed by Army service in Vietnam, Stan pursued a career that has included stints as a newspaper reporter, photographer, and automotive industry consultant, but most of all as a writer. He is the author of many articles and books. His work has appeared in Automobile Quarterly, Nautical Quarterly, Yankee, and WoodenBoat, among other publications.

Among his best-known books are Ferrari, the Man, the Machines (Automobile Quarterly/E. P. Dutton), Catboats (International Marine), The Wianno Senior Story, a Century on Nantucket Sound (Wianno Senior Association), and A Man for All Oceans, co-published in 2017 by Tillbury House Press and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. A Man for All Oceans was the recipient of a John Lyman Book Awards Honorable Mention. Author Nathaniel Philbrick noted: “Grayson casts a revelatory light not only on Slocum but the times in which he lived and sailed.”
