This collection of over 200 old photographs of Bootle is a fascinating archive of a lost age. The photographs cover a period from the 1890s right up to the 1970s and show in detail how dramatic have been the changes in both the appearance of the area and the lifestyle of the people.
These photographs illustrate a time when Bootle had its own police force, fire brigade and trams, and a time when the docks were in their heyday and great liners graced the quaysides. Those days were often ones of poor housing and hardship for many but also ones of great celebrations too: witness the crowds enjoying the very popular May Day processions.
The photographs have been drawn mainly from the author’s own extensive collection of picture postcards but he has also borrowed from family albums of local people to give a wide scope to the material that makes up this unique sequence of largely unpublished images. The book will be a nostalgic trip for many Bootle people and a first glimpse of a bygone age for newcomers and the younger generation.
