The Boys’ Brigade, founded by Sir William Alexander Smith in Glasgow, has been helping to shape and mould young men for more than 130 years. It was an instant success, quickly spreading throughout the United Kingdom and around the globe – today, there are hundreds of thousands of members still enjoying the teachings of Smith and the values he sought to instil. In this lavishly illustrated history, Michael A. W. Strachan tracks the history of an iconic organisation that has been a pillar of communities around the world for over a century. Exploring a variety of topics, from how the uniform has developed to the way in which the Boys’ Brigade has adapted to the modern world, this is an essential read for members past and present.
Fraserburgh-born Michael A. W. Strachan graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2010 with a MLitt in Modern Historical Studies, focusing mainly on Scottish and Irish Studies. He has been a member of the Boys’ Brigade since the age of five, joining the Anchor Boys in 1992. He gained his Queen’s Badge in 2005, and has served as a voluntary officer in the Brigade since 2006. He served as President of the Buchan Battalion from 2013 to 2017.
