Previously, he taught at the Department of Political Science, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and was Agatha Harrison Memorial Visiting Fellow at St. Antony's College, University of Oxford. He has written a book on South Asian Islam and British Multiculturalism (Routledge, 2016).
