This book examines the key British commanders of World War II across the three branches of service.
As well being provided with biographical details for each of the 24 commanders selected, we are given fascinating insights into their personalities and their style of command. Assessments of their combat records and performances under pressure are also supplied. Contemporary images and magnificent colour artworks provide details of their uniforms, dress and appearance during wartime service.
The commanders brought to life by this book include Auchinleck, Alan Brooke, Cunningham, Freyberg, Harris, Montgomery, Ramsay, Slessor, Slim, Tedder and Urquhart.
Ian Sumner was born in 1953 in Eccles, near Manchester, UK. He originally trained as a librarian in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but now devotes himself to full-time writing. He has written numerous titles for Osprey, and several books on the history of the East Riding of Yorkshire, where he now lives with his wife.
Malcolm McGregor spent four years at art school and then went on to work in advertising for ten years. He started freelancing in 1966 and contributed uniform illustrations to Blandfords and several Orbis publications and also provided the figure paintings for War Monthly magazine. He has previously illustrated three book series on the Flags of the Third Reich for Osprey (Men-at-Arms 270, 274 and 278).
