Through powerful portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III's book NORTH chronicles the lives of surf people - and the community around them - along the North Shore of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i.
'The scenes captured in Cannon's photos embody that love [of water time] while conveying power, pride and passion: the way his subject hold their surfboards - and their families close; the way they gaze into the mighty waters, reflecting their own colorful spirits.' - US CNN Style
For the past 6 years Brown has photographed portraits against a 3x9 meter seamless gray background. You are able to study every detail of equipment, their faces and feel their power. The large format (31.8 x 43.2 cm) of this book transports the observer into the inner circle of the North Shore, making the strength of the waves and the people almost physically perceptible. In addition to Cannon's decades-long passion for surfing and photography, NORTH is inspired by his family roots, which have made Hawai‘i home since the 1920’s.
