There are many towns and cities within Great Britain described in the guide books as being 'Georgian', but most of these places have, in fact, much more ancient roots and owe their present character to the extensive development that took place between the last quarter of the seventeenth century and the end of the Georgian era in 1830. Chichester is an archetypal example of such a city, and one whose buildings have merited entries in most books on Georgian architecture.
