Since the early 2000s, Urs Birchmeier, Anne Uhlmann and Carlos Rabinovich have been designing buildings with a high degree of spatial quality and social relevance – and continue to do so as BUR Architekten, their Zurich-based practice founded in 2016. While the Gartenhof School in Allschwil (2016), with its atria, open learning zones and colourful façade structuring, provides a permeable learning environment, the Centre for Dentistry in Basel (2019) impresses with its urban presence and clear organisation.

Text in English and German.

Urs Birchmeier studied architecture at ETH Zurich. He worked at Betrix & Consolaccio, Meili & Peter and Gigon/Guyer, where he was project manager of the Museum Liner in Appenzell. In 2000 he founded his own architectural office and realised some smaller properties together with Daniel Kaufmann. From 2000 to 2002, he was a design and diploma assistant at the chair of Prof. Wolfgang Schett at ETH Zurich. In 2003, Birchmeier Uhlmann Architekten was founded with Anne Uhlmann as a partner. By 2016, various public buildings had been built. In 2011, the collaboration with Carlos Rabinovich began, which led to the founding of BUR Architekten in 2016. Anne Uhlmann completed her architecture studies at ETH Zurich. She worked at Hariri & Hariri in New York and as a project manager at Staufer & Hasler Architekten in Frauenfeld, where she was responsible, among other things, for the construction of the Häldeliweg lecture hall at the University of Zurich. From 2003 to 2006 she was a design assistant at the chair of Prof. Adrian Meyer at ETH Zurich and from 2012 to 2013 a lecturer in design and construction at the ZHAW Zurich. Carlos Rabinovich studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires and at ETH Zurich (Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture). He worked in Buenos Aires with Antonio Díaz and Luis Ibarlucía Arquitectos and realised several residential buildings together with Sergio Forster. He worked as a project manager at Antonio Díaz y Asociados in Madrid and at Diener & Diener Architekten in Basel. From 2000 to 2008 he was a design and diploma assistant to Prof. Wolfgang Schett at ETH Zurich. In 2000 he opened his own architectural office in Zurich.
