An account of the author's service with the British Army in India and in Afghanistan during the First Anglo-Afghan War. Despite the inhospitable nature of the Afghan terrain, he took part in the relief of Jellalabad and the rescue of British prisoners in Kabul before returning safely to India.
John Greenwood, originally destined for the Church, was educated at a military academy in Hanover before joining the 31st Regiment of Foot in Bengal. He was posted with the regiment to Dinapore, Ghazeepore and Agra before taking part in the campaign to relieve the siege of Jellalabad in 1842 during the First Anglo-Afghan War.
