70 YEARS OF 007
Meet James Bond, the world's most famous spy, in these landmark 70th anniversary reissues of Ian Fleming's classic series.
In the novel that introduced James Bond to the world, Ian Fleming's agent 007 is dispatched to a French casino in Royale-les-Eaux. His mission? Bankrupt a ruthless Russian agent who's been on a bad luck streak at the baccarat table. 'Le Chiffre', has been a prime target of the British Secret Service for years. If Bond can wipe out his bankroll, Le Chiffre will likely be 'retired' by his paymasters in Moscow. But what if the cards won't cooperate?
Taut, tense, and effortlessly stylish, Ian Fleming's inaugural James Bond adventure has all the hallmarks that made the series a touchstone for a generation of readers.
'It was 1953 and it was very remarkable for the time, because Bond was so cruel. He's horribly tortured in the book and there are some very grim moments in it. But I also think it's Fleming's best writing. It wings along it's very hard to stop reading. It's also brilliant at place. He manages to summon up the smoky stench of a casino in a way that no one else has ever managed to do.' Ben Macintyre
Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London on 28 May 1908. On the outbreak of the Second World War he played a key part in British and Allied espionage operations. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953 and introduced James Bond, Special Agent 007, to the world. The first print run sold out within a month. Following this initial success, he published a Bond title every year until his death. The Bond novels have sold more than 100 million copies and inspired a hugely successful film franchise which began in 1962 with the release of Dr No, starring Sean Connery as 007.
