First published over 20 years ago, this book remains the definitive study of Fidel Castro. Based on interviews conducted between 1958 and 1966, the book covers a wide range of topics, including aid to other revolutions, relations with the United States and the Soviet Union, and individual freedom in a Communist society. For this edition the author

Lee Lockwood first arrived in Cuba on December 31, 1958—the day before Fidel Castro took power. He has since made more than thirty trips there, writing and reporting on the revolution for publications such as Life, Newsweek, The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, and The London Times.Lockwood was a staff photojournalist with the Black Star Photo Agency for more than twenty-five years, and his photographs are in several major museum collections. Other published works include books about Eldridge Cleaver and Father Daniel Berrigan. Lockwood's documentary film, "The Holy Outlaw," about Father Berrigan's fugitive life underground, was shown on National Educational Television. He won the 1967 Overseas Press Club award for distinguished foreign reporting for Castro's Cuba, Cuba's Fidel and for his report on North Vietnam, "Behind the Enemy Lines," in Life magazine. He is the founder of the Center for Cuban Studies in New York.
