This book is a comprehensive collection and exhibition of Chen Yujun’s art, thoroughly introducing the artist’s creative philosophy, origins and stylistic changes to readers in the English-speaking world. With the theme of growth, Chen’s art explores the mutual influence and intertwining of individuals, society, regions and civilisations, innovating and evolving through the exchange of civilisations.
The book will accompany Chen Yujun’s retrospective solo exhibition, which will be held at the Long Museum in Shanghai in the summer of 2025.
Chen Yujun, born in Putian, Fujian Province in 1976, is a new-generation artist of the post-70s in China. Initially well-known in the art community for his collage paintings, Chen’s contemporary artistic language is rooted in traditional clans, regional environments and personal memories, incorporating both local and international cultural elements and perspectives. His works are collected by many internationally renowned art institutions, including the Long Museum, the Yuz Museum, the He Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hong Kong M+ Collection, the White Rabbit Collection, and the Finnish Presidential Palace, among others.
Dr Joshua Gong is a leading expert on contemporary Chinese art and chinoiserie. He taught at the University of Sussex from 2010 to 2018, then lectured at Shanghai Normal University.
