This collection of over 200 old photographs of Chesterfield is a sample of the many thousands of images which are now available to view on the award-winning website Picture the Past, a joint project set up by the Councils of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Nottingham, to display the photographic archives held in their museums and libraries.

These images, many never before published, provide a fascinating pictorial history of Chesterfield over the past 150 years, covering such themes as the famous ‘Crooked Spire’ and the three railway stations which once operated in the town, while focusing particularly on areas which have undergone major change such as Beetwell Street or Saltergate. The result is a book that will delight anyone who has an interest in this famous Midlands town.

The images were selected and annotated by Ann Krawszik, who is the Local Studies Librarian at Chesterfield Library.
