It may come as a surprise that there were as many as the 250 British generals featured in this book active in the War: In fact there were more than 750. The less important - or less interesting - have of course not been included. The longest entries are naturally on the major figures such as Brooke, Wavell, Auchinleck, Slim and Wingate, but there is considerable information on all those included gleaned from primary and secondary sources over many years of painstaking research. A great reference work but also marvellous to dip into.

Business Consultant Richard Mead has been researching for, and writing this, his first book, for the past fifteen years. He lives in Gloucestershire. During his distinguished career Lt Gen Sir Alistair Irwin has been GOC Northern Ireland (2000-2003), Colonel of the Black Watch, and Adjutant-General (2003-2005). Now retired, he is, inter alia, the Army member of the War Graves Commission, President of the Royal British Legion, Scotland, and Joint President of the Officer's Association.
