In 1973 there were approximately 150 Fire Brigades protecting the United Kingdom – all with their own ideas on how to design and specify fire engines. However, local government reorganisation the following year was about to change that.
This book is a unique photographic record by distinguished fire engine photographers John Toomey, who came especially from New York, and Andrew Henry. It documents the amazing diversity of British post-war fire engines. Captions and an expert commentary are provided by the highly respected Fire Brigade author and historian Ron Henderson.
Andrew Henry is a fire engine enthusiast, with a particular interest in classic examples used in Britain. Ronald Henderson has served for five years in the Fire Service and also served for thirty-four years in the Ambulance Service. He has a BSc in Emergency Health Care and is a State Registered Paramedic. As an accomplished emergency services historian he has a huge archive of photographs and technical resources. He is a Member and Past Area Secretary of the Fire Brigade Society and a Member of the National Assocation of Retired Firefighters. John Toomey, a talented fire engine photographer from New York City, came to the United Kingdom to create a unique photographic record of the diversity of the British Fire Brigades and their appliances before their reorganisation.
