The common image of the Confederate Army during the Civil War is dominated by a limited number of early photographs of soldiers wearing the gray and butternut associated with the CS regulations and quartermaster issues.

Ron Field is an internationally acknowledged expert on US military history. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982, he taught high school history in the US and UK until his retirement in 2007. In 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, based in Washington, DC, and was awarded its Emerson Writing Award in 2013.
Richard Hook trained at Reigate College of Art, and after national service he became art editor of the much-praised magazine ‘Finding Out’. He has worked as a freelance illustrator ever since, and has illustrated more than 30 Osprey titles.
