Though one of the most significant American writers of the 20th century, Saul Bellow has continually elicited conflicting responses from critics. Some critics have seen him as America's greatest contemporary writer, while others have discounted him as discouragingly redundant. GERHARD BACH is Professor of American Studies at the Paedagogische Hochschule Heidelberg in Germany. He is also an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah. Bach has edited several books, and his articles have appeared in such journals as Studies in American Jewish Literature, Saul Bellow Journal, and American Literary Realism.
